As a Valkyrie, Brynhild’s job isto select from those who have fallen in battle, deciding which ones will go to Valhöll where they will join the ranks of the Einherjar and prepare to fight beside Oðin at the battle of Ragnarok. In the Saga of the Volsungs, Brynhild disobeys Oðin who then puts her into a magical sleep. A warrior named Sigurð finds her and breaksthe spell. What follows is a complicated series of events that inspired Wagner’s famous four-opera Ring cycle.
