As recounted in the Saga of the Volsungs, Sigurð wields an impossibly sharp sword called Gram that was forged by his foster father, a dwarf named Regin. With this mighty weapon, he avenges his biological father’s murder, slays a dragon named Fáfnir (Regin’s brother) and shortly thereafter kills Regin, claiming the dragon’s vast treasure (including a cursed ring) for himself. He later awakens a sleeping Valkyrie named Brynhild, a meeting that ultimately seals his fate.
