The sea incarnate
 
Ægir is a jötunn who rules over the sea (his name is, in fact, an Old Norse word for ocean). He has nine daughters with his wife, Rán, each named for a type of wave. Ægir is known as a reluctant yet gracious host who brews the finest beer in all the nine realms. As such, he is often pressed into hosting feasts for the gods and it is in his hall that stories such as Lokasenna in the Poetic Edda take place. Because of this, Ægir is one of the most highly attested of all the jötnar.
